Ballroom Dance Resource - Dance Quotes|Dance Poems  (Next Page)
We've put together a collection of dance quotes from famous (and infamous?) people as well as dance-related poems from very talented writers...
"You don't stop dancing from growing old, you grow old from
stopping to dance." --Unknown
"The forms of tango are like the stages of marriage. The American
tango is like the beginning of a love affair, when you're both
very romantic and on your best behavior. The Argentine tango is
when you're in the heat of things and all kinds of emotions are
flying: passion, anger, humor. The International tango is like
the end of the marriage, when you're staying together for the
sake of the children" ~ by Barbara Garvey, Smithsonian Magazine
"Dance is like the dance of LIFE. The whole idea is that
if you're on the sidelines, you really don't join in the
sort of SPIRIT of life, the PASSION of life. If you
decide to take part in the dance, even if you can't
dance very well, if you have two left feet, at least
you're trying to be part of the DANCE. And that, I
think, is a beautiful thing." ~ Randall Miller, Writer & Director
"Dance is life at its most sensational moment" Josie Neglia

POEM: "LIFE ON THE DANCE FLOOR"
by Tim Chapman
When newly we start
we head for the dance floor
with all of our heart.
The dancing begins,
but the night's just too short
We simply can't get
enough of this sport.
There's leading and following
those subtle cues.
We waltz 'round the dance floor
not knowing whose thoughts are whose.
The music, the moves -
all track of time we lose.
Then the lights go up
and we see life's hues.
Leading and following
in life we proceed
like a beautiful mare
and a virtuous steed
playing and prancing
through all of the weeds.
Then life has its bumps
like on the dance floor,
when he's counting 3
when she's counting 4.
A natural right turn
avoids a collision and more.
Now what do we do
to recover our place?
Cast a little blame
and complete our disgrace?
Unkind words
can put us out of the race.
No just a smile, a wink
and "You did that one well!
Let's go on from here."

Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like nobody's watching". ~ unknown

I'm sure most of you competitors and ex-
competitors can relate to this poem. I know I can!
FIRST COMPETITION
by Christopher Pilarchik
(www.ballroombliss.com)
With eyes open and wide awake,
Terror whispered in my ear
"For You there'll be no sleep this night,
Let me show you what you fear!"
Like some silent and oppressing scream
From evil Banshee called,
All my faults and weaknesses
suddenly recalled.
My arms, my feet, my head, my frame,
None of them are ready!
And now to really top it off
My legs are none to steady!
"Oh why, oh why did I agree to dance,
I can't do competitions!
I get nervous in front of crowds"
my petrified self petitions.
Thus morning comes and I prepare
To enter the lion's den,
When my instructor is already saying "We're up NOW!"
Who what where why WHEN?!?
We're now in line and I see the others,
polished, gleaming, finished,
how can I compete with them,
my spirits further diminished.
Then my instructor takes my hand
and sensing my nervousness, winks,
"Isn't there time to hit the bar,
I think I need a few drinks!"
Now on the floor waiting
for the music to start,
I'm feeling Mike Tyson punches
with every beat of my heart.
Music begins,
God don't let me freeze,
cause all of a sudden
I can't feel my knees!
Somehow my partner
suddenly takes the reigns,
How numb I feel
for so many pains.
My mind is blank
My body all nerves,
all this up and down
then around, then swerves.
I'm dizzy, I'm lost,
I haven't a clue,
Do your stuff teach,
I'm just following you.
After what seems like an eternity
the music finally done,
"You know," I said, "it really wasn't bad,
In fact I even had fun!"

"Dance is the hidden language of the soul." - Martha Graham
"There is nothing more notable in Socrates than that he found
time, when he was an old man, to learn music and dancing, and
thought it time well spent."
...Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)
"We dance for laughter, we dance for tears
We dance for madness, we dance for fears
We dance for hopes, we dance for screams
We are the dancers, we create the dreams"

Don't Quit
When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not QUIT.

The Ballroom Christmas Carol ~ Unknown
Twas the night before Christmas and all through the hall
Everything was now ready for old St. Nick's Ball
The bunting was hung by the bandstand with care
In hopes that Duke Ellington soon would be there
My wife in her diamonds and I in my tux
Had just stepped out of our limo deluxe
When from out of the hall the band's tuning I heard
So I hurried us in without one more word
The band was now playing a waltz in strict time
With everyone doing correct fall and climb
A foxtrot next was the bandleader's pick
So everyone started out slow slow quick quick
Of course at all times to leave nothing to chance
All couples observed a strict line of dance
But when West Coast Swing everyone started to hear
They asked each other "Can they do THAT here?"
When the band finally stopped and the music had faded
Among the revelers embraces were traded
And I heard them exclaim as danced out of sight
"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!"
